Mr. Clyde Mitchell Lewis

Mr. Clyde Mitchell Lewis, age 89, of Cedar Bluff, AL passed away on Saturday, March 15, 2014 at Redmond Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Lewis was born in Walker County, GA on June 4, 1924, son of the late Basil Lewis and Ora Dockery Lewis. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Claude Lewis, and two sisters, Clara Mae Lewis and Marie Nettles. Mr. Lewis was of the Baptist faith.

After retiring from General Electric, Mr. Lewis enjoyed travelling in his motor home, especially to Florida in the winter. He was an avid gardener, who enjoyed working in the dirt and watching things grow. As a younger man, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and water skiing. In later years, he spoke of military service in WWII where he was part of the Normandy Invasion of France. During this time, he received an American Theatre Ribbon Victory Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon with two Bronze Battle Stars, and a Purple Heart . During the Americans’ march across France into Germany, Mr. Lewis was injured in battle and captured by the Germans. As a prisoner of war, he was detained in Moosburg, Germany in Stalag 7. The American captives were ordered to clean the Colliseum before Adolf Hitler spoke to his people along with rebuilding areas bombed by the Allies.

Survivors include his wife, Vivian Searles Lewis, Cedar Bluff; two sons, Dr. Terry Lewis and his wife Debora, Rome, and Don Lewis and his wife, Phoebe, Thermopolis, Wyoming; one granddaughter, Amy Lewis, Rome; one grandson, Bridger Lewis, Thermopolis, Wyoming; one brother, James Lewis, Lyerly; and one sister, Edna Cook, Summerville.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Good Shepherd Funeral Home, with the Rev. Gary Diggs, officiating. Interment will follow in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens, with Shaklin-Attaway Post Five Honor Guard of the American Legion will conduct full military graveside rites. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until the hour of the service.

Pallbearers are asked to assemble at Good Shepherd Funeral Home on Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at 12:30 p.m. and include: Bridger Lewis, Gordon Williams, Roger Dobson, Kenneth Dobson, Denny Ivey, Steve Ivey, and Mike Chapman.
