Mr. Tom Wade Hampton

Mr. Tom Wade Hampton, age 89 of Centre, passed away on Saturday, April 3, 2021 at his home in Centre.

Funeral services will be 2:PM Wednesday, April 7th at Perry Funeral Home Chapel. Graveside services will be in Cherokee Memory Gardens. Rev. Eddie Nation and Rev. Melvyn Salter will officiate. The family will receive friends from 12:PM until 2:PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family will accept memorials to the First Baptist Church of Centre.

Mr. Hampton was a native of Cherokee County. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Centre. Mr. Hampton retired from Gadsden Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. with 34 years of service. He served on the Cherokee County Commission for 4 years and was president of the Cherokee County Commission for 6 years. He served 24 years on the Centre City Council, and was a Chartered member of the Centre Quarterback Club. During the Korean War, Mr. Hampton served in the Navy. He helped start Dixie Youth Baseball in Cherokee County and coached for 20 years. While on the Cherokee County Commission, he helped start the Cherokee County Water Department. He helped start the first County Fire Department at Tucker’s Chapel. Another accomplishment was the start of the Cherokee County Library. He helped in the placement of Compton Mills in Leesburg, AL.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Jones Hampton, daughter Regina (Jimmy) Mize; sons Joey Hampton, Tommy Hampton, and Mark (Rhonda) Hampton, all of Centre. Grandchildren, Joshua (Nicole) Hampton, Jamie (Meaghan) Hampton, Aaron Hampton, Autumn Hampton, Kyle Mize, Luke Hampton, and Logan Hampton. Great Grandchildren Liam Hampton, Emmie Hampton, Emma Price, Gabe Hampton, and Bella Hampton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Lee Hampton. Brothers Norman Hampton, Edd Hampton, and L.C. Hampton.

Pallbearers are: Billy Rex Miller, Harold Day, Al Shumaker, Jamie Jordan, Tom Garrett, Jerry Lockridge, and Thomas Russell. Honorary Pallbearers are: Members of the Al Shumakers Sunday School Class; All former White Sox and Cedar Bluff Yankees who were his former players.
