Multiple Accidents Resulting From Icy Roads Monday Morning

Highway 68 – beginning at the intersection of County Road 1 – going down the mountain to Collinsville has been closed due to icy conditions; a number of accidents have already taken place with multiple vehicles, including several 18 wheelers – sliding off the roadway due to the slippery surface.  Again, the Collinsville Police Department has informed us that section of Highway 68 going down the mountain into Collinsville is shut down.

The East side of Lookout Mountain/Highway 68 is starting to show some ice as well so slow down in that area or better yet avoid driving in that location if possible.

We’ve also had reports of patchy ice along Highway 9 in the Faril community, County Road 36, at the intersection of County Road 3, areas of County Roads 82, 75, 52, 41 and 47 as well as Highway 273.

Cherokee County Highway Department Crews are applying “slag” to problem spots around the county.

Also, Beason Gap in Ft Payne has been closed due to slippery conditions – AND Highway 35 past Beason Gap going down the mountain into Ft Payne is now closed due to icy roads, and we’ve been informed that two 18 wheelers are crossways in the road after attempting to go down that section, with one of the big rigs having been struck by a pickup.

According to the DeKalb County EMA all roads in the county have been deemed impassable effective immediately because of icy conditions and multiple wrecks; the National Weather Service in Huntsville said that non-emergency travel is strongly discouraged across DeKalb County

Ice has been reported at Portersville Gap as well.

Other areas are also presenting travel problems – we urge everyone to drive with care and exercise extreme caution, especially in upper elevations and on bridges and overpasses.
