Multiple Deaths Reported in Train Derailment in India

iStock/Thinkstock(KANPUR, India) — Dozens of people were killed in a train derailment in India on Sunday.

Fourteen carriages of the Indore-Patna Express derailed near the city of Kanpur, and the cause of the derailment was not immediately clear.

Early reports said more than 30 people had died, but the death toll was expected to rise, according to BBC.

Over 100 people were reportedly injured, BBC reports.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a tweet: “Prayers with those injured in the tragic train accident.”

“Anguished beyond words on the loss of lives due to the derailing of the Patna-Indore express. My thoughts are with the bereaved families,” he said in another tweet.
