National Weather Service Says More Rain on the Way Sunday

The rain continues across much of Alabama today (Friday, December 28th).  The National Weather Service has issued multiple flash flood warnings and flood advisories overnight – there are also multiple areal flood advisories in effect across the state as well as numerous flood warnings for rivers and creeks.

There have been a few severe thunderstorm warnings overnight and one tornado warning, though a tornado has not yet been confirmed.

There has been enough rain to set some daily rainfall records for December 27th.

  • Tuscaloosa had 2.72 inches, breaking the record of 1.76 set in 2014.
  • Montgomery got 1.92 inches, breaking the record of 1.77 inches set in 2000.
  • And the oldest record to fall was in Anniston. That area got 1.34 inches, which broke the record of 1.2 inches set in 1904.

The weather service in Birmingham said radar and surface observations show a broad area in Alabama received between two and four inches of rain overnight – with some spots even receiving as much as four to six inches of rain in southwest Alabama.  Forecasters warn that travelers should take it easy on the roads today, as ponding of water and tire spray will make for hazardous driving conditions.  Periods of moderate to heavy rain are forecast to continue through the morning hours and move from west to east this afternoon, the weather service said.  An additional one to three inches will be possible today with isolated areas possibly getting even more.

There could be a brief respite from that rainfall tonight and into Saturday morning, prior to the next rainmaker moving in, according to forecasters.

Rain will be possible through the rest of the weekend and into next week – and it could be the middle to end of next week before the rainy pattern takes a break.
