National Weather Service Says More Winter Weather Possible this Week

Well, it just keeps getting stranger every day.

According to the latest from the National Weather Service, Alabama could be facing a number of rounds of winter weather later in the week, along with some of the coldest air of the season.  That first round could arrive as early as Wednesday – then last into Thursday as a strong cold front moves across the state; that front could generate rain and a few storms.  Cold air will be right behind it and the rain could transition briefly to freezing rain in the northern part of the state.

The Weather Service in Birmingham clarifies the NORTHWESTERN portion of Central Alabama will run the greatest risk of seeing freezing rain

That system could cause slippery spots on roads, bridges, overpasses and sidewalks.  That cold front will bring a blast of arctic air into Alabama, with some of the coldest temperatures so far this winter.

That next round of cold weather could arrive this Friday – as another storm system approaches Alabama and the system has the potential to bring accumulating snow to parts of the state.  Cold air will be in place across the state and precipitation could fall as snow for parts of north and north-central Alabama from Friday morning through Friday evening.

It’s still far too soon to say who will get snow, and just how much, as a lot depends on the track of an area of low pressure that is expected to move through the state.
