New Addition to Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security

Director Shawn Rogers’ choice of Alex Abernathy as new “County Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security Officer” is now official.  During their Monday morning meeting, the Cherokee County Commission announced approval for that move.  Abernathy will soon be coming onboard – and, we hope to be sharing additional information on his role with the organization in the near future.

Director Rogers also said the initial round of COVID-19 vaccine shots administered at the Cherokee County Rescue Squad Building last Wednesday went extremely smooth, with almost 400 doses being given that day – 200 first round doses that morning, and 200 second round that afternoon.

This will continue each Wednesday for several weeks HOWEVER this is for those that have scheduled their appointment through the Alabama Department of Public Health – there will be no “walk-up” vaccinations offered.

In other business the Commission adopted a Resolution recognized April 17th – 24th as “County Cleanup Week” to coincide with the Alabama PALS campaign.

Approval was also  granted for the following “Rebuild Alabama” annual bid contracts – Charlie E. Watts, Inc. / Bituminous Surface Treatments; Wiregrass Construction, Co. / Hot Mix Asphalt Paving; and Whitaker Contracting, Inc. / Micro-Surfacing Seal Coat.

Commissioners likewise adopted a Resolution, and approved an agreement with, the Alabama Department of Transportation for the installation, maintenance and/or the landscaping for special directional or political boundary signs.
