New Regulations Regarding Eligibility for Receiving Food Stamps in Alabama

Food Stamps 1

New rules and regulations regarding eligibility for Food Stamps in the state of Alabama, has resulted in a huge drop in the numbers of those receiving the supplements.

According to the Alabama Department of Human Resources, that number has dropped from 49,940 as of January 1st this year to 14,076 at the present time.  That comes as the result of new regulations requiring all able-bodied adults without dependents – to go to work or lose their benefits.

Guidelines now stipulate, that those between the ages of 18 and 49, who are not disabled or raising minor children, must work at least part-time.

That work requirement is NOT in place in 13 Alabama counties; those include Greene, Hale, Perry, Dallas, Lowndes, Wilcox, Monroe, Conecuh, Clarke, Washington, Choctaw, Sumter, and Barbour; that due to the high unemployment in those areas.

Exceptions to the work requirements are available for those who are physically or mentally unable to work; are pregnant; are a parent, or other household member, with responsibility for a dependent child under age 18 or someone who is physically or mentally disabled; is caring for an incapacitated person; is a student at least half-time in a school or training program; or is participating in an alcohol/drug treatment program.

Recipients are now limited to three months of benefits over a three-year time frame, unless they are working or participating in an approved training program. Those who don’t meet those requirements risk losing their benefits which average about $150 – $170 per person a month.
