Newly Appointed Leesburg Police Chief Resigns

It appears that Leesburg’s Police Department will once again be without a Chief as newly appointed Chief Brian Gilliland is resigning and returning to his previous position at the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department.

Leesburg Mayor Brandy Pierce confirmed to WEIS on Friday evening that Gilliland had informed him that he was in fact leaving, Mayor Pierce stated that a special called meeting of the Town Council would be held on Monday to accept the resignation and to officially announce the opening of applications for the position.

Gilliland was sworn into office back on November 18th, 2016 following the retirement of longtime Police Chief Lanny Ransum. Mayor Pierce said that Gilliland leaves on good terms and that he wishes him nothing but the best in his future endeavors. We will be in attendance at Monday’s Leesburg Town Council meeting and hope to be able to talk with Gilliland at that time.
