Standing alongside German Chancellor Angela Merkel at a news conference in Berlin, Buhari said Aisha Buhari belonged in his kitchen.

“I don’t know which party my wife belongs to, but she belongs to my kitchen and my living room and the other room,” he said according to BBC.

Merkel reportedly glared at Buhari and then laughed.

The Nigerian president was responding to an interview that Aisha, a businesswoman and activist, had with BBC. She criticized his leadership, as Nigeria suffers from a recession for the first time in a decade, and suggested she would not support him if he ran for president again.

“If it continues like this, I’m not going to be part of any [re-election] movement,” she said to BBC.

Buhari, who ran for president three times before being elected on the fourth attempt, told reporters in Berlin he could “claim superior knowledge over her,” according to BBC.
