UPDATED Friday morning:

A segment of I-59 has been re-opened through Etowah and DeKalb counties, though lane closures are expected as cleanup continues from a tanker crash.

That tanker left the roadway near mile marker 189 Thursday afternoon – the resulting fuel spill led authorities to close the highway between Exits 188 and 205; that’s between Reece City and Collinsville. Traffic was detoured onto U.S. Highway 11.

All lanes re-opened around midnight – however, one southbound lane will be closed today (Friday) near mile marker 189 to give crews room to continue the cleanup according to the Gadsden/Etowah County Emergency Management Agency.

Alabama State Troopers say that both the north and south bound lanes of Interstate 59 were closed one mile north of the Reece City intersection as safety crews dealt with an overturned tanker which spilled gasoline and diesel fuel onto the roadway Thursday afternoon.

Gadsden Etowah EMA Director Denise Cooey told WEIS Radio News the 18 wheeler was carrying approximately 8000 gallons of gasoline and overturned at mile marker 188 northbound at the Noccalula Falls exit.

The Reece City Fire Department, the Attalla Fire Department and its hazmat crew, the Gadsden-Etowah Emergency Management Agency, Alabama State Troopers and other personnel preformed cleanup work.

Motorists were detoured to Highway 11 as an alternate route. The Tanker was baffled so entire cargo did not leak out – the remaining fuel had to be off-loaded before truck could be righted.

The driver was taken to Riverview Regional Medical Center with what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries.
