The incident reportedly occurred at Coliseum Apartments, near the campus of Jacksonville State University shortly before 11:30. About an hour earlier, officers had responded to the location after a report had been made stating that a man had been shooting windows out of cars using a BB gun. By the time law enforcement arrived, the subject had already left – but they returned after being notified that the same individual had returned to the complex.
When confronted by officers the man reportedly failed to drop the weapon; he then “closed distance” with the officers and was told several times to discard the knife.
As he continued to approach police one of the officers was forced to shoot the man; 26 year old David McBrayer of Jacksonville – was pronounced dead at the scene by Calhoun County Coroner Pat Brown.
McBrayer died from multiple shots to the torso; the body has been sent to Huntsville for an autopsy.
The investigation, which is being headed up by the Alabama Bureau of Investigations, is on-going.
