One Killed, One Injured in Construction Zone Wreck on I-59 Thursday Afternoon

An accident occurring in a construction zone on I-59 in Etowah County has claimed the life of one construction worker and left another injured.

Senior Trooper Chuck Daniel said the accident took place just prior to 5:00pm near the 178 mile marker, when a Hyundai hit a message board in the right-hand lane of the northbound lanes; the two workers were about to move the sign when the wreck happened.

Coroner Michael Head pronounced the victim, 44 year old Joshua Goodwyn from Hanceville dead at the scene; he was an employee of Good Hope Construction; the other worker age 23 was air-lifted to UAB Hospital for treatment, while the driver of the Hyundai, was carried to Riverview Regional Medical Center in Gadsden.

Trooper Daniel said that death marked the eleventh traffic fatality in the state over the past seven days.

The incident remains under investigation.
