One Person Airlifted From The Scene After Crashing Attempting To Elude Sheriff’s Office Deputies

One person was airlifted from the scene of an accident occurring on Tomcat Road inside Etowah County on Thursday afternoon.

According to reports the driver of the vehicle was involved in a pursuit with Cherokee County Sheriff’s deputies after fleeing a traffic stop. The driver lost control of the vehicle before flipping numerous times.

Cherokee County Chief Deputy Josh Summerford told WEIS News that the deputy attempted a traffic stop on County Road 128 for a speeding violation. The vehicle began to flee and the deputy quickly lost sight of the suspect vehicle. Later that same afternoon the deputy spotted the vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed yet again this time on County Road 24 with the driver again refusing to stop.

Summerford said that the driver was driving extremely reckless and in doing so lost control of the car and crashed. The vehicle caught fire with deputies from Cherokee and Etowah County pulling the man from the vehicle. The driver, who has not been identified at this time, was airlifted to an area trauma center for treatment.

Summerford said that they later learned the man has outstanding warrants and additional charges are also pending related to the pursuit.

The Ballplay Bend, Ball Play No. 1 Fire Department, A-Med Ambulance service and Alabama State Troopers were on scene.

Tomcat Road was closed for more than two hours as the investigation into the crash continued.
