One Person Injured After Vehicle Leaves Road And Catches Fire On Highway 68 East

One person was airlifted for treatment following a single vehicle accident on Alabama Highway 68 East on Wednesday night.

According to Leesburg Police, the roadway was shut down for around 2 hours after the car left the roadway coming down the mountain. The impact of the crash caused the motor to separate from the car before it caught fire.

The male driver of the Nissan Altima identified as Dylan Helms of a Leesburg address was trapped inside and had to be extracted. He was taken to a landing zone at the Leesburg FEMA Building and air lifted to the Huntsville trauma unit with severe injuries.

Alabama State Troopers, Leesburg Police, Cherokee County Rescue Squad personnel, Leesburg and Sand Rock Fire Departments, Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department and Floyd EMS all responded to the scene.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
