Paul Bettany says “Solo: A Star Wars Story” is “a caper” and “a gangster movie”

Disney(LOS ANGELES) — Actor Paul Bettany says Ron Howard’s upcoming Solo: A Star Wars Story will be different than any other film in the Star Wars franchise.

“It’s Han Solo’s story, and of course his story would be a caper,” Bettany told the U.K. publication Total Film. “On one level, it’s a gangster movie. That’s really interesting, because it’s within the canon, but really different. It’s f***ing Han Solo!”

Bettany, who describes his character in the movie as a “gangster,” goes on to confirm director Ron Howard re-shot most of the film after original directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller left the project over creative differences this past June.

“[Howard’s] staging ability is so f***ing brilliant,” Bettany told the U.K. publication Total Film. “I think he went in and he was like a laser, working out what needed to be done when he looked at the footage. And then, as things moved on, everybody felt so secure with him. And they gave him more. He re-shot a lot more than was originally intended.”

Bettany stars along side Alden Ehrenreich, Emilia Clarke, Woody Harrelson and Donald Glover. The film is set to be released May 25, 2018.

This is the second Disney-owned franchise in which Bettany will appear in 2018; he’ll reprise his role as Vision in Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Infinity War, which debuts May 4.

Star Wars and Marvel are both owned by ABC News’ parent company Disney.
