Pedestrian Injured, Horse Killed When Struck by Car Along Stretch of County Road 26 Tuesday Afternoon

State Troopers, Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office Deputies and Floyd EMS responded to the scene of an accident involving a car and a Centre woman – 47 year old Shayla Curley – who along with her husband was walking four horses alongside a stretch of County Road 26 just after 5:30pm Tuesday, when the accident occurred.

We spoke with Curley’s husband Greg by phone Thursday morning and he told us that both his wife and one of the horses was struck by the car, knocking them into the cotton field by the roadside.

Mr. Curley managed to round up the other three horses which had bolted in the confusion – being kicked himself by one of the panicked animals in the process.  He unfortunately, then had to fetch a firearm and put down the injured horse.  Mrs. Curley was taken to the ER first in Centre and she was then transported to Rome where she spent the night and is currently recuperating from her injuries at home.

According to the information provided by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency the driver of the 2007 Honda involved, 31 year old Misty Mackey of Piedmont, escaped injury.

The incident remains under investigation by Alabama State Troopers.
