PIEDMONT – Jack Hayes’ bases-loaded single with one out in the eighth inning gave the second-ranked Bulldogs a 5-4 win in their Class 3A baseball quarterfinal opener with Winfield. Hayes also hit a solo homer in the sixth.
Winfield evened the series at a game apiece in the nightcap with a 7-6 decision, setting up a winner-take-all Game 3 at Piedmont Saturday at 1 p.m.
