Piedmont City Council approves pay raises for all city employees

PIEDMONT – The Piedmont City Council approved pay raises for all city employees during its regular meeting on Tuesday.

All police department employees will receive a $2 per hour raise, and all other city employees will see a $1.50 raise. The raises are set to begin immediately.

Speaking of city employees, the council voted to approve a pandemic incentive bonus to all city employees. This will be paid from the American Rescue Plan money the city received.

The council also voted to change the current mask requirement in place for employees working within six feet to a “recommended but not required” option, based on low COVID cases in the county and no current cases for city employees.

The council also voted to appoint five individuals to boards, which include the Parks and Recreation Board, Cemetery Board, Zoning Board, and Airport Authority Board, and voted to approve a proposal for a downtown event to raise funds for Lisa Davis on April 9. Further details will be forthcoming.

In other action at Tuesday’s meeting, Twisted Brotherhood RC Alabama presented Piedmont Police Chief Nathan Johnson with a monetary gift from their “Back The Blue” event for the Piedmont Police Department.

In closing comments, the council members recognized Piedmont High School’s football team, band and cheerleaders for their success this season. The Bulldogs won the school’s fifth state football championship last Thursday in Birmingham, rallying from a 23-point halftime deficit to earn a 35-33 victory over Montgomery Academy. Piedmont finished the season at 13-2.

The next council meeting has been moved from Dec. 21 to Tuesday, Dec. 14.
