Piedmont City Council Meeting Includes Claims of Harassment, Denials and Heated Speech

During this week’s meeting of the Piedmont City Council, Councilwoman Brenda Spears, as part of her District Report – claimed harassment.

City Clerk Michelle Franklin, however, took exception to Spears claim

Mayor Rick Freeman then had his say on the matter.

In spite of all the yelling, the city did manage to conduct some business.

A Resolution was adopted changing the time for Municipal Court to 9:00am on the first and third Tuesday of each month; Keisha Mitchell was appointed to the School Board; the council voted to discontinue the contract for animal control with Calhoun County, and will hire an animal control officer for the city – that action was taken due to “unsatisfactory service”, according to several of the council members.

In other action the council approved Mike Ledbetter as Fire Chief, and they heard from Piedmont Electric & Power Company’s manager, asking for approval to purchase necessary equipment for substation #2 and to declare selected equipment as surplus – the cost for desired equipment came to $48,000 and was approved with the money coming from Electric Revenue Bond Funds.

The Piedmont City Council meets the first and third Tuesday of each month at 6:00pm – with the next meeting taking place July 2nd.
