A new ventilation system will soon be added to the Piedmont’s fire station, following council unanimous approval at Tuesday’s meeting.
City officials accepted a low bid of $48,693 for the purchase and installation of Safe Air’s Plyvoment premium ventilation system, as requested by Fire Chief Mike Ledbetter.
At that time, Safe Air had provided the lone estimate of $62,000 for their system. City officials then agreed that two additional bids needed to be obtained prior to making a decision.
According to Ledbetter, the Plyvoemnt system is expected to be installed at the Center Avenue firehouse within the next 30 days. The cost of the new system will be paid out of the city’s fire tax fund.
The ventilation system is designed to capture the fire truck’s diesel exhaust, which has been linked to an increased risk of cancer among firefighters, according to Ledbetter.
“This council is all about safety. We just needed a couple of bids to look at,” Mayor Bill Baker assured Ledbetter.
In other business, the council passed a resolution, authorizing the City of Piedmont to participate in the upcoming back to school sales tax holiday, July 19th -21st.
The council agreed to annex a small property into the city, at the request of the property owner.
Bills for payment were approved in the amount of $397,495.82.
An abatement measure was passed, allowing the city to cut the grass on two properties along both 5th Avenue and Vanderbilt Street.
The council granted a request for the 8U youth softball team to conduct a roadblock fundraiser downtown on July 6th to raise money for hotel accommodations during an upcoming Montgomery tournament.
Mayor Baker reminded everyone in attendance of the city-wide yard sale event set for Saturday, July 20th.
Finally, this year’s Christmas parade was rescheduled to Monday, December 2nd at 6pm. The change was made due to the original date of December 7th conflicting with the SEC Football Championship.
The next regular Piedmont City Council Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, July 2nd, immediately following the work session, which is set for 5:30pm.
