Piedmont Parade Re-named in Wake of Dispute with the Freedom From Religion Organization

City of Piedmont 1Due to pressure from the Freedom From Religion Foundation – the City of Piedmont will be changing the them of their upcoming Christmas parade, from “Keep Christ in Christmas”, to simply “The City of Piedmont Christmas Parade.”

The foundation reportedly sent a letter, dated November 24th, challenging the theme of the parade as unconstitutional; arguing the theme violated the Constitution’s First Amendment establishment clause – going on to state that the theme alienates non-Christians and others in Piedmont who “do not in fact have a strong belief in prayer by turning them into political outsiders in their own community.”

In a letter dated December 1st, the City responded through the law firm of Merrill, Merrill, Matthews & Allen – that the parade would be re-named as “The City of Piedmont Christmas Parade”.

The parade is scheduled for this Thursday (December 4th).

All this comes on the heels of a similar dispute involving that group, over prayers offered at Piedmont home football games.

The prayer has since been replaced with a moment of silence.
