Man Suspected In Horse Killing Arrested

Brandon Kyle SalersThe Oxford Police Chief says they have arrested a suspect in connection to the deaths of two horses.

Chief Bill Partridge says Brandon Kyle Salers of Anniston is believed to have committed the killings off of McIntosh Road Feb. 4, 2014. He is charged with two counts of malicious killing of livestock.

In a press release issued on Friday, Partridge states he is pleased to announce the warrant.

“Understand we will NOT tolerate this type of criminal activity!” said Partridge.

At the time, owner Renee Rice told FOX6 News the two horses belonged to her daughters. She was taking one of the girls to school Feb. 4 when they saw one of the horses lying down. They thought the horse might be sleeping but when Rice sent someone to check, one horse was dead and another died shortly after.

Friday, Rice praised the work of Oxford Police.

“Just to know that there was that kind of cruelty, was unreal – and just meanness. It was just meanness. It was just pure meanness, to know that kind of cruelty was in the world. I was just thinking how safe we sometimes feel in this area, in Oxford, and not having that kind of meanness here,” Rice said.

Oxford Police Captain L.G. “Chip” Owens wouldn’t comment on what evidence led to Salers but did share how relatives helped track him down.

“We actually had relatives of his calling and telling us. And we acquaintainces of his calling us and telling us where they thought he was,” Owens said.

Owens says Salers was arrested by another agency during a traffic stop. He also credits commenters on the Oxford Police Facebook page for generating leads.
