Pro-Choice Protesters March in Poland Against Proposed Abortion Ban

Omar Marques/Anadolu Agency/Getty Images(WARSAW) — Women in Poland marched through the streets Monday to protest a proposed total ban on abortions in the largely-Catholic country.

It was referred to as “Black Monday,” with many reportedly wearing black to mourn the reproductive rights of women and carrying wire coat-hangers to represent the dangers of underground abortions, according to BBC.

Under the proposed legislation, women who get an abortion and the doctors responsbile for the procedure would receive a five-year prison sentence.

The pro-choice group Save the Women argues that law in Poland is already restrictive enough to women, BBC reports, and there is limited access to contraceptives.

Polish pro-choice protesters weren’t the only ones holding demonstrations in Europe. Other protests were held in Belfast, Berlin, Brussels, Dusseldorf, London and Paris, according to BBC.

If the legislation passes, Poland would join Vatican City and Malta as the only European countries with a total abortion ban.
