“Quick-Change Artists” Hit Businesses in Cherokee County

Business owners and retailers should be aware that Cherokee County has been the target of what are often referred to as “quick-change artists” this week.

These are individuals who specialize in confusing store clerks by rapidly asking for specific denominations during transactions – as they’re receiving change from their hundred dollar bill they may ask for a certain amount in fives and tens, then ask for that hundred back and give the clerk the correct amount from the change they were just given or juggle the money around in any of a dozen ways; it sounds impossible – but these people are experts at doing it and they can literally steals hundreds of dollars in just a couple of minutes.

And the victim never knows what happened until they count down the money at the end of their shift.

According to Centre Police Chief Kirk Blankenship, at least one business was victimized this week, and other attempts were made as well – with a black Dodge Charger being associated with those attempts.

These “quick-change artists” usually prey on businesses during the hectic holiday season as those behind the register are in a rush and often overwhelmed.  If working as a clerk, at any point in a transaction, you feel uncomfortable – stop.  Don’t try to do too many things at one time.  Complete each money transaction before moving on to the next, keeping careful track of the amount all the way through.

Remember, these people are very, very good at what they do.  Don’t let your guard down.
