Re-Count Ordered in Chattooga County Tax Commissioner Race

After the Chattooga County Tax Commissioner race was decided by a mere eight votes last week, a re-count will be held as required by Georgia Election Law, under the circumstances.

In that race Democratic candidate Joy Cooper Hampton defeated Republican Rickey Hughes by that small margin.

Chattooga County Election Superintendent Jon Payne told media outlets there was a total of eight overseas ballots than could be considered in the race if received by today (on Monday November 14th).  Normally the deadline for the ballots would’ve been Friday, however this year the deadline fell on a holiday – Veterans Day.

Payne says there are also 19 provisional ballots which could play a role in the re-count.

That re-count will likely take place on Tuesday of this week (November 15th).
