Redskins quarterback Alex Smith suffers season-ending injury

Phil Ellsworth / ESPN Images(LANDOVER, Md.) — Washington Redskins quarterback Alex Smith suffered a serious leg injury on Sunday, and now the team has to prepare to finish the season without him.

Smith, 34, was sacked in the third quarter of Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans, breaking the fibula and tibia in his right leg. He later underwent surgery at a local hospital.

Colt McCoy stepped in for Smith and helped the Redskins take the lead in the fourth quarter, but the team ultimately lost to Houston, 23-21.

McCoy, 32, will continue to start in Smith’s absence. Sources tell ESPN that Washington will also be inviting several quarterbacks for a tryout, including EJ Manuel, T.J. Yates, Mark Sanchez, Kellen Clemens and Josh Johnson.
