The “Renew Our Rivers” campaign removed more than 380,000 pounds of trash and debris from Alabama’s waterways last year (2013).

In a news release from Alabama Power Vice-President Matt Bowden – he stated that some 5,700 volunteers in 32 communities across the state partnered with power company employees to clean up the waterways.

The program – which started back in 2000 – has seen a huge number of volunteers turn out every year in Cherokee County.

That’s Carolyn Landrem with the Weiss Lake Improvement Association.

Over the years the Renew Our Rivers campaign has continued to grow, with an estimated 56,000 participants removing more than 13 million pounds of trash from waterways in the Southeast.
