NOEL CELIS/AFP/Getty Images(OTTAWA, Ontario) — The government plane of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was headed for Belgium when it returned to Ottawa, Ontario shortly after takeoff on Saturday night, according to CTV News.

A federal official told CTV News there was a mechanical problem with the plane, but the plane was able to leave late Saturday.

Trudeau was on board the plane and is expected to meet with leaders of the European Union at a summit in Brussels Sunday to sign the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA).

The trade deal had been in negotiations for seven years and all 28 members of the EU were required to approve it. Trudeau was set to head to Belgium on Thursday for a signing ceremony, but the Wallonia Belgian region vetoed the agreement. Marathon talks were held and the EU was able to reach a consensus.
