Safe Driving Tips to Help Avoid Deer Collisions

This time of year the number of accidents involving deer dramatically increases.  With the explosion in the deer population over the last several years – there is no foolproof way to avoid being involved in a wreck – especially in rural areas; however, there are some things you can do to greatly reduce the chance of an accident.

Reduce your speed.

Driving slower will give you more time to avoid a deer if you see one.

Keep in mind, Deer often travel in herds.

If one deer crosses the road, it is highly likely that a second or third may be nearby.

Use extreme caution when driving at dawn and dusk.

This is when driver visibility is poor.  Deer are most active during the early morning hours and especially between 6:00 and 9:00pm.

Do not swerve to avoid hitting a deer.

Keep your car headed straight even if it means hitting the deer.  Many severe accidents are not due to colliding with deer but are instead a result of losing control of your vehicle while trying to avoid the animal.

Always wear your seat belt.

This simple safety measure could save your life or help reduce the severity of any injuries.

Watch for the reflection of deer eyes, and for deer silhouettes, on the shoulder of the road.

Honk your horn when you see a deer near the road.

This is the most effective way for a deer to know where your car is coming from and where it’s headed. Their instincts should do the rest.

Use high beam lights where possible to illuminate areas deer could enter roadways.

This provides greater visibility and it allows you to spot deer as soon as possible, and just a few seconds could mean the difference between having an accident and avoiding one.
