Sand Rock rally falls short against Westbrook Christian

SAND ROCK – The Sand Rock Wildcats fell behind by three touchdowns in the first half, but rallied to make a game of it against visiting Westbrook Christian on Friday night in Class 2A, Region 6 football action Friday night.

Two Ace Ashley-to-Jacob Cornejo touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters made it a seven-point game, but the Wildcats couldn’t complete the comeback in a 21-14 setback.

Westbrook Christian (2-0, 1-0) took an early 7-0 lead on a 35-yard touchdown run by Ryan Scott with 10 minutes to go in the opening quarter. Karmichael Cattling added two second-quarter scores on runs of 8 and 2 yards to take a 21-0 lead at halftime.

Cattling led the Warriors with 108 yards on 22 carries and the two scores. Will Noles added 87 yards on 17 totes.

Ashley finished the game completing 12-of-23 pass attempts for 161 yards and two touchdowns for Sand Rock (1-1, 0-1). Cornejo caught four passes for 44 yards and both scores. Olin Pruitt had five receptions for 92 yards.

Ethan Clanton led the Wildcat defense with 11 tackles.

Sand Rock hosts Gaston on Friday. Westbrook Christian hosts Southeastern.
