Scam Using the IRS Name Hits Northeast Alabama and Northwest Georgia

No one wants to hear from the IRS regarding an issue with a tax return…but rest assured, if you do, it won’t be by phone and the IRS employee won’t berate and threaten you in the process.

We’ve had reports of just that thing taking place both here in northwest Georgia and across the state line in northeast Alabama.

Residents have notified us that the person claiming to be with the Internal Revenue Service has, in every case, been extremely rude and has threatened a lawsuit if money is not sent immediately.

The call is from a 202 area code – which is notorious for these type scams.  In this case, they simply have several different people manning the phones, who are trained to answer “IRS” and then proceed to con you out of your hard earned money.

Using a well known name, especially one that instills fear in even an innocent person, is merely another way of intimidating a person into doing what they’re told.

All-in-all it’s just another scam.  If you receive such a call, simply hang up.
