Second Stimulus Check Still Up for Debate

The $600 addition to unemployment checks is set to run out as July arrives and there hasn’t been any clear indication they’ll be extended or that a second stimulus check will be okayed

Even though some people STILL haven’t received that first stimulus check, many people are asking for a second one.  On Tuesday of this week, President Trump told reporters that he’d support a second stimulus check; however, the president only has the power to veto or sign the bill into law, not create it.  That power lies with Congress, with bills going through the House of Representatives first.

The House recently passed a $3 trillion HEROES Act that calls for another round of $1,200 stimulus checks, as well as $1,200 for dependents, with a maximum of $6,000 per family.

It seems unlikely that the Senate will pass the act as is – since Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has describing it as “dead on arrival.”  McConnell and other Republicans want a new stimulus package to focus more on businesses and getting people back to work rather than on giving out checks. They’ve discussed $450 “Back-to-Work Bonuses” and payroll tax deductions among other actions that they believe would get the economy moving again.

The fact that there are people who are making more with the $600 bonus to unemployment checks than they would at their jobs is another thing Congress is considering about another stimulus package.  While there may be a second stimulus package, it is still unclear whether it will include a second stimulus check.

The decision will most likely be made in July before Congress recesses in August.
