Senator Richard Shelby Comments On The Passage Of FY2020 NDAA

U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee and its subcommittee on defense, today released the following statement regarding Senate passage of the Conference Report to accompany S. 1790, the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2020.  Following passage in the House of Representatives last week, the authorizing legislation will now move to the President’s desk for his signature.

“This legislation contains major victories for Alabama and the nation’s defense and aerospace sectors,” said Senator Shelby.  “This bipartisan, bicameral measure will help provide our troops with the tools necessary to best defend our nation.  This is an important step in the process, and I look forward to securing critical funding for the Department of Defense through the appropriations process as soon as possible.”

The Fiscal Year 2020 NDAA Conference Report, which passed by a vote of 86-8, provides a total of $735 billion for national defense priorities.  Specifically, the legislation authorizes a 3.1 percent pay raise for members of the Armed Forces, the creation of a new Space Force, resources needed to carry out the most recent National Defense Strategy, reform of military housing, and continued research and development into key technologies.
