Just when you thought that the weather couldn’t possibly get any weirder forecasters with the National Weather Service have decided to pull out the word “SNOW”.

A cold front is expected to push through Alabama late Saturday into Sunday, and that front will bring the potential for a round of severe weather with the Storm Prediction Center already outlining an area in Alabama that could possibly see severe storms on Saturday with another round of severe storms going Saturday into Sunday.  A blast of winter air will follow the front, and it could be cold enough to squeeze out a few snowflakes if moisture lags long enough behind the front.  Following almost 70 degree temperatures for Christmas, levels are expected to fall to the freezing point or below for much of the state this weekend.

It’ll really feel like winter by Sunday night on into Monday morning – of course, as far as snow goes – in Alabama it’s always a wait-and-see situation.  The weather service in Huntsville said there is the possibility on a wintry mix Sunday into Sunday night as temperatures fall behind the cold front, however by no means is that a sure thing; and black ice could form on roadways, if there’s enough moisture in place when the cold air arrives.

The weather service in Birmingham says some forecast models are hinting for a brief transition to “light wintry precipitation” on Sunday night – however, forecasters as of Tuesday morning were “leaning toward a quicker, drier forecast,” which would keep snowflakes out of the picture.

The weather service also stresses that if snow does happen to fall, it isn’t expected to accumulate.
