Snapchat Filters Among Top Halloween Costume Trends of 2016

Courtesy YouTube(NEW YORK) — Snapchat filters are not just for Snapchat anymore.

The popular feature of Snapchat — an app in which videos and messages quickly disappear — can turn users into dogs, fairies and more — and now it can also be your Halloween costume.

On Pinterest, searches for Snapchat filter costumes are up nearly 1,500 percent from last year, a spokeswoman told ABC News.

Larkin Brown, a researcher for Pinterest, said Snapchat filters are at the intersection of two of this year’s biggest Halloween costume trends.

“The first is pop culture costumes that are very ‘right now’ as opposed to some of the more throwback-themed costumes that really popped in years past,” Brown told ABC News by email. “The other trend we’re seeing a lot of is glam makeup as a bit of a departure from scary gore looks.”

“Snapchat costumes fit into both of these trend categories, as they’re a fun way for people to try something new in terms of glammed-up makeup but also feel very relevant and of-the-moment with their costume,” Brown said.

Kelly Mindell is a self-described “DIY-er since birth” who founded the website StudioDIY.com. Her DIY Halloween costumes are among Pinterest’s most popular, and her Snapchat filter ideas include everything from dogs to butterfly and flower crowns.

“Everyone can relate to it and they see it with their friends,” she said of the filters’ rise in costume popularity. “And it’s a great group costume, which people are always looking for.”

Tips

For any of the animal filters: Cut animal ear shapes out of felt and hot glue them to a headband. If you can’t find Halloween makeup, use gel eyeliner to draw on the details of the face.

To make the butterfly filter: Give craft store butterflies (check the faux flower section!) and give them a makeover with mod podge and glitter, then glue to a barrette or headband.

For the flower crown: Check the dollar store for the most affordable faux flowers and be sure you have wire cutters on hand to trim the stems before gluing to a headband.
