Some Leesburg Residents Say They Want An Established Zoning Ordinance

Several concerned citizens were in attendance during Monday’s meeting of the Leesburg Town Council, among those was Mr. Greg Lumpkin who was there representing that group of citizens as well as business owners to address the council concerning the possibility of developing a Zoning Ordinance for the Town of Leesburg.

A special Town Hall Meeting is set to take place the first week in May in order to give citizens, property owners and business owners a chance to have their questions answered by a representative with the Northeast Alabama Regional Planning Commission. That meeting will be held at the FEMA Building in Leesburg and as soon as the date is set we will pass that information on to you.

In other business, the Leesburg Day Committee will be meeting Thursday April 6 to discuss the budget for this year’s event. The council also granted approval to Cedar Hill Church on Wednesday nights during the month of June for community wide activities.

Sealed bids were also opened for farming rights of 26 acres of land located behind the Maverick service station, the Rochester Family had previously been farming the land however they are giving up the property. The council awarded the highest bid to Rex Johnson for $2,750 or $101.85 per acre.

Mayor Brandy Pierce also announced that the application process for a certified police officer has been extended an additional two weeks. The council also voted to renew their Ordinance for DC Gas Franchise with amendments.

The council also voted to allow Police Chief Brent Grime to attend the annual police chief’s conference and approved the purchase of new badges at a cost of $365.50 and crime scene tape at a cost of $44.76.
