Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — Sony unveiled two new versions of its hit PlayStation video gaming console on Wednesday, one geared toward professional gamers and a smaller console that the company says is more energy efficient.
At an event in New York City, the company introduced the world to PlayStation 4 Pro, which will render some games in 4K ultra high definition resolution — an image about four times larger than the current high-def standard currently available.
And, Sony says, as long as the unit is plugged into a high dynamic range television, many games played on the new unit will display more vivid and realistic color saturation.
The PlayStation 4 Pro, which is targeted at more serious gamers and features a 1TB hard drive, will be available starting Nov. 10 with a retail price of $399.
Sony also revealed a revamped version of its standard PlayStation 4.
The new system is lighter than its predecessor and offers a 500 GB hard drive for storing games and other data. It’s also 28 percent more energy efficient, according to Sony. This unit will hit store shelves on Sept. 15 with a price tag of $299.
The new PlayStation units follow the release of a smaller version of Microsoft’s Xbox One in June.
Video game console manufacturers are now releasing incremental updates more frequently, rather than major updates spaced several years apart.
