Spring Garden Girls Come Up Short In Regional Championship Game

An unfortunate rarity resulted in the end to Spring Garden’s girls season one step short of another appearance in Birmingham on Tuesday night at JSU’s Pete Mathews Coliseum.

The #2 ranked Lady Panthers (25-8) out of Class 1A dealt with a tight battle with #3 Skyline (28-5), something the Spring Garden team was no stranger to this season. The ending though, which included Skyline getting out to a double digit lead at one point in the 4th period to give them a cushion, resulted in the season ending 60-53 loss for Spring Garden and gave the Lady Vikings of Skyline the 1A Girls Northeast Regional crown.

Spring Garden was led by Neely Welsh, who finished the game with 18 points off 6-12 shooting (1-2 from 3, 5-8 FT) and 4 rebounds all on defense. Skyline meanwhile was carried towards their eventual victory with a remarkable performance from Bailee Usrey who ended up with a huge 30 points off 7-15 shooting (3-6 from long range, 13-15 from the line), 5 rebounds (1 offensive, 4 defensive), 1 assist, and 1 block.

With the loss, Spring Garden’s season is done but not without a remarkable run that continues to establish the top level caliber the Lady Panthers basketball has continued to show for the past half decade. All of us at WEIS wish Spring Garden congrats on the remarkable season, no matter the ending result.

Skyline meanwhile advance to the 1A Girls State Semifinals at the BJCC Legacy Arena in Birmingham, AL to take on St. Luke’s on February 25st at noon. Congrats to Skyline and good luck to Viking nation as they cheer on their girls to a chance at the state championship!
