Spring Garden improves to 4-0 with 34-14 win over Cleveland

SPRING GARDEN – Ryley Kirk completed 9-of-13 pass attempts for 140 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for 30 yards and a pair of scores in leading Class 2A, No. 6 Spring Garden to a 34-14 victory over Cleveland in Region 6 football action on Friday.

Kirk scored the Panthers’ first touchdown on a 2-yard run with 36 seconds remaining in the first quarter. He opened the second-quarter scoring with a 23-yard touchdown pass to Cooper Austin to give Spring Garden (4-0, 3-0) a 14-0 advantage.

Austin led the Panther receivers with five catches for 115 yards and the score.

Cleveland (3-2, 2-1) got on the scoreboard on quarterback Logan Washburn’s 2-yard touchdown run with 3:49 left in the first half to trim the Panther lead to 14-7, but just over a minute later, Spring Garden running back Weston Kirk put the Panthers back up by two scores at 21-7 with his 5-yard touchdown run.

Ryley Kirk extended the Panther lead to 27-7 with a 1-yard touchdown run with 1:48 remaining in the third quarter. Fullback Luke Welsh added a 22-yard touchdown run with 6:43 left in the game to give the Panthers a 34-7 edge. He led Spring Garden’s ground game with 140 yards on 18 carries.

Washburn scored on a 13-yard run with 4:16 to go for the final.

Chapel Pope led the Panther defense with eight tackles. Weston Kirk posted six stops and Ryley Kirk finished with five tackles.

Spring Garden travels to Hokes Bluff next Friday.
