Spring Garden picks up pair of area basketball wins over Westbrook Christian

SPRING GARDEN – The Spring Garden basketball teams picked up a pair of Class 2A, Area 12 basketball wins over visiting Westbrook Christian on Friday. The second-ranked Lady Panthers posted a 60-18 victory, while the fourth-ranked Panther boys earned a 44-30 win.

In the girls game, Libby Brown collected 14 points, eight rebounds, three steals, two blocks and an assist. Kayley Kirk contributed 12 points, three boards, two steals and an assist. Neely Welsh added 11 points, six boards, two steals and a block. Sarah Kate McKay managed 10 points, two rebounds and a steal. Ace Austin finished with nine points, nine boards, nine assists and a steal.

Spring Garden (17-1) built a 22-6 first-quarter advantage and held a 37-8 halftime edge.

In the boys game, Cooper Austin came away with 18 points, four steals, three assists, two blocks and a rebound for the Panthers (9-3). John Welsh delivered 13 points, nine boards, two steals, an assist and a block. Andrew Bates finished with six points on a pair of treys.

The two teams were tied 7-7 at the end of the first quarter, but a 15-4 run in the second gave the Panthers a 22-11 halftime edge. Spring Garden led 33-20 at the end of three quarters.

Spring Garden is scheduled to play at Gaston on Tuesday.
