Spring Garden Principal Mike Welsh Elected Superintendent Of Education for Cherokee County

Over 4,000 voters turned out to vote in the Republican Primary Run-Off election on Tuesday.

Spring Garden Principal Mike Welsh narrowly defeated Sand Rock native Andrew ‘Andy’ Jones to become the next Superintendent of Education in Cherokee County.

Welsh garnered 2,102 while Andy Jones had 2,054 votes.

We also had an opportunity to speak with Jones who said that he is happy for Mr. Welsh and looks forward to working with him in the future.

Welsh will be replacing longtime Superintendent of Education Mitchell Guice who has opted to retire at the end of his term in January.

Mike began his career 29 years ago as a High School Math Teacher. he has been an assistant football coach, a head basketball coach, club sponsor, an assistant principal, and is currently the principal at Spring Garden School.

Mike has worked with students and teachers in all grade levels and subject areas and saw what was effective and what was an ineffective use of time and resources.

He has worked with educators, administrators, parents, and students in every situation imaginable. He is a Sunday School teacher at Union Grove United Methodist Church. He is the Vice President on the Central Board of the Alabama High School Athletic Association. But, more importantly a father and a husband.
