Spring Garden sweeps Ranburne in Heflin Holiday Hoops Tournament

HEFLIN – Different day, same results for the Spring Garden basketball teams in the Heflin Holiday Hoops Tournament. The Panthers swept Ranburne on Tuesday, with the boys claiming a 63-37 win and the girls earning a 69-49 victory.

In the boys game, Weston Kirk collected 15 points, including three 3-pointers, to go along with three rebounds, a steal and a blocked shot for the Panthers (8-3). Chaz Pope posted 10 points, including a pair of treys, with four boards and an assist. Cam Welsh contributed nine points, a pair of rebounds, a steal and an assist.

Ryley Kirk and D’Angelo Wright both netted eight points. Ryley Kirk had a pair of treys, three rebounds, three assists and a steal. Wright also added five boards, a steal and an assist.

The Panthers jumped out to a 25-5 advantage at the end of the first quarter and didn’t look back. They led 41-13 at halftime.

In the girls game, Ace Austin tossed in 33 points to go along with seven rebounds, six assists, four steals and three blocks to lead the Lady Panthers (15-2).

Lexie Adkison added 18 points, seven rebounds and two assists for the Lady Panthers. Neely Welsh contributed 15 points, eight boards and an assist. Sarah Kate McKay finished with five points, three assists and a rebound.

Like the boys, the Lady Panthers jumped out to a big lead early, taking a 32-8 advantage at the end of the first quarter.

Ranburne cut its deficit to 39-26 at halftime, but a 26-12 Spring Garden run in the third quarter put the game out of reach.

Both Spring Garden basketball teams conclude the tournament on Wednesday against host Cleburne County. The girls game is at 3 p.m., followed by the boys at 4:30 p.m.
