Spring Garden takes area baseball opener with Sand Rock, 6-1

SPRING GARDEN – Landon Gowens turned in another solid mound performance for the Spring Garden Panthers on Tuesday against Class 2A, Area 12 rival Sand Rock. He tossed a complete-game three hitter, giving up just one earned run with three walks and 11 strikeouts in the Panthers’ 6-1 win.

Chapel Pope, Ryley Kirk and Cam Welsh each had a double for the Panthers (15-9, 4-2). Pope drove in a run while Kirk and Welsh scored a run apiece. Luke Welsh collected a hit, a run and two RBIs. Chaz Pope added a hit and a run. Grayden Guthrie finished with a hit and a RBI.

Logan Wood led the Wildcats (10-7, 4-3) at the plate with a double, a walk and a RBI. Slade St. Clair also doubled. Cade Ballenger contributed a hit. Olin Pruitt scored Sand Rock’s lone run.

Pruitt also suffered the loss. He worked six innings and gave up four earned runs on six hits with no walks and a pair of strikeouts.

The two teams continue their series at Sand Rock on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
