CLASS 6A AND 7A BEGIN FRIDAY IN 29TH STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Southside-Gadsden Defense Extends Scoreless Streak to 18 Matches in 3-0 Win

Class 4A/5A Girls’ Soccer Semifinals

HUNTSVILLE – Coach TIFFANY JULIEN CARGILE’S Southside-Gadsden (21-2-0) beat St. John Paul II Catholic 3-0 to advance to the AHSAA Class 4A/5A State Girls’ Soccer Championship finals at John Hunt Soccer Complex. The Panthers face Montgomery Academy in the finals Friday at 5 p.m.  The trio of ANNA MOTLEY, HALLIE-KATE SMITH and GRAYSON CARTER each scored goals for Southside, which ran its scoreless streak defensively to 18 matches 36 consecutive halves with the win. The Panthers have outscored opponents 150-8 on the season – including 134-0 during that shutout stretch. In four playoff games Southside has outscored opponents 25-0. St. John Paul II goalkeeper ALLIE SONGY had nine saves in the semifinal loss. Southside had 19 shots overall to just one for St. John Paul II (12-5-3).

Montgomery Academy 5, John Carroll Catholic 2 HUNTSVILLE – Montgomery Academy (21-3-1), winners of six of the last eight Class 1A/3A girls’ state championships, moved to 4A/5A this season and Coach CARTER TUCK’S Lady Eagles are back in the finals again with a 5-2 win over John Carroll Catholic (12-5-3). The match was deadlocked at 2-2 at halftime with MEAD ROBERTSON notching the first goal for Montgomery Academy just six minutes into the match. The Cavaliers stormed back to take a 2-1 lead on goals by KENNEDI LANGAN and RUBY THORNTON, but the Eagles tied the match at 2-2 a minute later thanks to HAYES JENKINS’ goal set up by an assist by TARA KATZ. The second half was all MA with KATZ and BROOKE HORNE netting goals and the Eagles’ team getting the credit for the fifth goal. The two Class 4A/5A boys’ semifinal matches finished up late due to weather interruptions earlier in the day with Springville (20-6-0) advancing to Friday’s 7 p.m. finals to face Briarwood Christian (21-1-3). The Tigers posted a 2-1 win over St. John Paul Catholic II (16-6-1) and the Lions downed Montgomery Academy (24-6-0) 2-1. No other information was available late Friday night.

 

AHSAA STATE SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIPS JOHN HUNT SOCCER COMPLEX, HUNTSVILLE

Semi-final matches are scheduled 1A/3A and 4A/5A Thursday, May 9; for 6A and 7A, Friday, May 10. Finals will be May 10 (1A/3A and 4A/5A) and May 11 (6A and 7A). The NFHS Network will live-stream all finals. Vestavia Hills HS NFHS SBP will live-stream the 7A girls’ match Vestavia Hills vs. James Clemens).
