State Superintendent Says Fall Competition Sports Will Resume, Are You Ready For Some High School Football?

During a press conference by State Superintendent of Education Dr. Eric Mackey on Friday morning it was announced that some extracurricular activities like High School Football would be allowed to take place this fall, although things might look a little different. Some may not be able to resume while maintaining proper social distancing guidelines.

Dr. Mackey gave an example of Choir as one of those activities that may look a little different. Obviously, it is difficult to social distance when you have to have voices close together to mix well, many activities you can do while wearing a mask and choir is not one of those. Mackey said that Choral teachers are working diligently to come with ideas and solutions to make it work and stated that they had presented to him some great ideas.

In terms of competition sports such as Football, Volleyball, Basketball etc. Dr. Mackey said that those activities will resume this fall. Mackey said that his department has been working closely with the AHSAA and the Department of Public Health to ensure that proper protocols are set into place. For example game balls will be sanitized and wiped down frequently during games.  Measures will also be set to ensure proper social distancing for spectators, coaches and players. The number of individuals allowed on the sidelines during games will be reduced to essential personnel and players only.

State Health Officer Dr. Scott Harris said that as decisions are made on the local and state level it is important for everyone to manage expectations concerning the fact that we may see outbreaks of Coronavirus associated with these events, he went on to say that it is likely to happen but that limiting close contact within reason would certainly combat that.

Dr. Mackey said that local jurisdiction rules will also apply in addition to state regulations. Each governing body will have the jurisdiction to set forth their own rules and guidelines regarding wearing masks/face coverings, social distancing and so on during sporting events.
