Strong Storm Front Rumbles Through Cherokee County Monday Afternoon

A strong storm front rumbled through Cherokee County Monday afternoon starting around 3:20 with Significant Weather Advisories being issued for Cherokee and Etowah counties.

At 4:05pm, Doppler Radar indicated a strong line of thunderstorms some nine miles west of Centre moving southwest at around 15 miles per hour, packing winds of 40 miles per hour; that, combined with heavy rainfall led to a large number of downed trees and in some cases, downed power lines.

Cherokee County EMA Director Shawn Rogers reported multiple trees down in the areas of County Road 36 near County Road 70 in Sand Rock; there were power lines reported down across a driveway on Sand Rock Avenue, and across County Road 44 in Cedar Bluff between County Roads 698 and 102.

Trees were also down across Highway 411 between Leesburg and Gadsden with the Coates Bend Fire Department working to clear the roadway there.

There were numerous reports of trees being down in Etowah county as well.

The rains were, for the most part, over by 5:00pm and fortunately, there were no reports of anyone being hurt during the storms.
