Investigators with the Georgia Fire Marshal’s Office were in Chattooga County once again in the early morning hours of Thursday; that, following another fatal fire.

According to a report by the Summerville News 35 year old Charlie Gifford died in the blaze at a residence located on Fourth Street in Summerville; he was living in an upstairs room at the home, which is where the fire is believed to have started, according to Summerville Fire Chief Robbie Lathem.

Two other men living downstairs stated that they awoke to find smoke filling the home just after 2:00am, and when they attempted to save Gifford they were unable to do so due to the heavy smoke and flames.  They then fled the structure, making it outside safely.

Chief Lathem said there were no working smoke detectors in the home.

This makes the ninth fatal fire in Chattooga County this year (2016).
