Tesla(NEW YORK) — Tesla announced new upgrades to its Autopilot software four months after a self-driving Tesla crash killed a driver in Florida.
With the upgrades, the electric car company said in a statement “the car should almost always hit the brakes correctly even if a UFO were to land on the freeway in zero visibility conditions.”
Tesla said the most significant update was the onboard radar, now the primary sensor, using “more advanced signal processing to create a picture of the world” that was not included in vehicles before October 2014.
The upgrades are expected to be released within the next two weeks.
Tesla’s Autopilot has come under scrutiny since the death of Florida driver Joshua Brown in May. Brown was driving on a divided highway in Florida using the feature when a tractor-trailer drove across the highway perpendicular to his Model S, according to a statement released by Tesla and the police report. It was the first known death of a Tesla driver using Autopilot.
