It appears dense fog played a role in an accident involving three trucks around a mile inside the Georgia state line in Floyd County Wednesday morning. 

According to Jerome Poole with the Floyd County Police Department, a log truck driven by 56 year old Steve Allen Ledbetter of Carrollton, Georgia was traveling westbound and due to the heavy fog, didn’t realize he was on the wrong side of the road until the truck hit two tractor-trailer type dump trucks, owned by Ronnie Sharp Trucking, that were traveling eastbound.

The first dump truck was driven by 62 year old Ronnie Sharp and the second by 53 year old Gary Michael Jenkins – both residents of Rome.

Incredibly, no one was seriously hurt.  Jenkins was transported to a nearby hospital, simply to be checked out.

According to the accident report, the wreck occurred at 4:24am Georgia time with the road being re-opened six hours later.

Ledbetter was cited in the accident.

As soon as the accident was reported Cherokee County emergency personnel were called in and stationed at Highways 9 and 35 and at 117 to direct traffic due to the road being closed down just across the state line, Passenger cars were detoured up County Road 117 while all big trucks were being re-routed to Highway 35, up 68 – eventually taking Highway 27 from Summerville to get into Rome.

Local responders were relieved by Alabama Department of Transportation personnel some four-and-a-half hours later at around 8:30am Alabama time.
